Smile

Hey where did you get that smile?
Saw you sitting on a park bench by the city mile
Your feet were bare and your hair was long
All rugged ‘round your shoulders

Sometimes I see you in the crowd
You know just where your voice is, so you sing aloud
And you let it ring through your guitar
All slung around your shoulders

I’ve never even heard you speak
And if I could it would be quietly
Lonely faces all around
And it’s getting into winter, there’s snow on the ground
My heart is hanging by a swing
All strung around my shoulders

I stand in line at the store
A cabbage and a beetroot to call my own
I see you walking by the window
A jacket ‘round your shoulders

I’ve never even heard you speak
And if I could it would be quietly
What would you ever say to me

Hey where did you get that smile?
Saw you sitting on a park bench next to a child
You were reading him a story
Your arm around his shoulder

Just for a moment I hear you speak
You read the voices so gracefully
And all the while the child is listening
